Named National Forests are listed as separate entities, even though many of them in recent years have been combined administratively to one degree or another. These combined entities are noted in parentheses. According to the most recent annual report, the total area under management of the Forest Service is 191,268,196 acres (298,856.56 sq mi., or 774,034.93 km²) under the categories of National Forest, National Grassland, or National Preserve. (There are other minor categories, primarily that of Purchase Units, which are not included here.)
