Development and filming

The Amazing Race 9 lasted 27 days and traveled over 59,000 miles and filming ran from November 7 to December 3, 2005. The race visited ten countries in five continents, three of which were previously unvisited. The three new countries were Greece

Cast

Applications for The Amazing Race 9 were closed on July 26, 2005 (a day after the original deadline). Semi-finalist interviews were held sometime in September 2005 and final casting interviews took place in October 2005.

Following the "Family Edition" experiment of Season 8, which featured teams of four racing in the United States and Central America, this season returned to the traditional format of eleven teams of two competing in a race around the world. The teams included hippie best friends, a couple married 40 years, and sisters living in different states.

B.J. appeared on a campus TV program called The BJ Show in honor of himself and co-host BJ Novak. Novak is now a writer/producer/actor on NBC's hit comedy show The Office. He is also the best friend of Harvard graduate, former band member of North & South, and top 40 contestant of American Idol 6

on the morning after the season finale. While it was a total shock to her, Yolanda enthusiastically accepted. This episode also previews their full progress on the final leg of "The Amazing Race", including Yolanda's progress on the roadblock.

Awards

On August 27, 2006, Season 9 won a Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Reality-Competition Program", the fourth consecutive award for the television series. Producers nominated this season instead of the critically lambasted Family Edition, which was also eligible for the award.

  • A team placement indicates that the team was eliminated.
  • An team placement indicates that the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race. The teams were forced to relinquish all of their money and belongings (except for passports and the clothes on their back) for the remainder of the race. In addition, they were not allotted money for the next leg and were not allowed to collect money until the next leg started for them.

  1. Leg 3 was double-length, with two Detours and two Roadblocks, shown over two episodes. The placements listed in the first column reflect the order teams arrived at the leg's halfway point.
  2. ^ Ray & Yolanda (who initially arrived 2nd) and BJ & Tyler (5th) were each issued a 15-minute penalty for taking a bus instead of a train all the way to the Isthmos Train Station. While the penalty resulted in Ray & Yolanda dropping to 3rd, BJ & Tyler's placement was not affected. Lake & Michelle were eligible to be penalized for the same infraction, but they were the last team to arrive to the pit stop, resulting in their elimination.
  3. While neither Ray nor Yolanda was shown performing the Roadblock on the final leg before arriving at the Finish Line, a montage shown on The Early Show the next day showed Yolanda as the member who had done the Roadblock task. This is included in the Roadblock count.

The first Detour of the Race was Motor Head or Rotor Head. In Motor Head, teams had to travel to a motorcycle shop named Caverna Moto Peças and assemble a motorcycle

, using an assembled motorcycle as a model. Then, using the parts provided and finished model for reference. When the motorcycle is properly assembled, the mechanic could start the bike and he would receive their next clue. In Rotor Head, teams had to travel to Campo de Marte Airport

. Then, using a flight directory to locate one of three buildings and since they varied in distance and each location had a limited number of tickets. Teams are need to find the closest building from a flight directory (Edificio São Luis Gonzaga, Atrium V and Hotel Meliá), once it located to their destination, a pilot would fly by helicopter

In the first Roadblock of the race, teams had to climb one of three stairwells 400 feet (121.9 m) on a fire escape of the Edificio Copan. Once on the top, they would put harness and rappel down the building. But in order which they arrived at the top would determine the order in which they would descend. The Roadblock for this leg of the race saw one member of each team had to choose a plane and doing a 12000 feet (3,657.6 m) tandem skydive. The instructor hands over to get their next clue. This leg's Detour offered teams the choice of Wet or Dry. In Wet, teams drove 6 miles (9.7 km) to a swimming hole called Buley Rockhole, then hiked and swam 1 miles (1.6 km) down a river infested with "spiders and poisonous plants" to receive their next clue. In Dry, teams drove 6 miles (9.7 km) on-road, then another 6 miles (9.7 km) off-road to a rock formation known as The Lost City. Once there, teams had to select a didgeridoo

The other team member was allowed to assist but not physically participate. Teams had a reference board with the flags of each destination country and three incorrect flags. After finishing the Roadblock, teams were allowed to run to the Finish Line.
