- This is the first time that the scores from the judges were shown in the preliminary swimsuit segment through electronic voting.
- This is the first time that the award winners for Africa and Oceania did not make it into the semi-finals.
- 10 out of 15 countries which made it into the semifinals, were not in the semifinals last year: Holland (1977), Panama (1979), Austria and Israel (1980), and Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, and Jamaica (1981). Hong Kong and Iceland had made into the semi-finals for the first time. Iceland marked its debut in 1955, while Hong Kong in 1959.
