Palarong Pambansa

The Palarong Pambansa is an annual multi-sport event
involving participants from the different regions of the Philippines
.
It started in 1948. Private schools and universities eventually joined the national event, which became known as the Palarong Pambansa in 1976. It serves as a national Olympics for students, with victors from competitions at the school, province, and regional level emerging to participate.Preliminary meets are undertaken as pre-requisites for individual and team athletes to qualify from one level to the next higher level of competition. The process of selection and elimination starts with school intramurals at the early part of the school year. Outstanding players and winners in each school are selected to represent the school in the next higher level of competition which is the district meets in a municipality. The process is repeated and continues to the provincial or city meets then to regional meets and finally culminates in the national games known as the Palarong Pambansa.
The games of the Palarong Pambansa are conducted to have a valid and universal basis for determining the interscholastic champion in each sport events being promoted.
The Palaro also serves as a medium for the total and balance development of students, and also as a feeder to colleges and universities as well as to the different National Association. Outstanding performers are recruited and given scholarship and further training to represent the country in various international sport competitions.
Arnis
will also be included among the priority sports in Palarong Pambansa (National Games) beginning 2010, in accordance to Republic Act No. 9850 in 2009, signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
