He is with 70 times the most capped Turkish wrestler and also Turkey's internationally most podium winning wrestler. He won World championship three times besides his two gold medal wins at the Olympics.

Following his retirement, he entered politics and served between 1973 and 1980 as deputy of his hometown Samsun from the Justice Party
