Dancing with the Stars (U.S. season 10)
Encyclopedia
Dancing with the Stars returned for a tenth season on March 22, 2010. There was not an elimination the first week of competition. The first elimination took place on March 30.
Samantha Harris did not return as co-host for this season, due to her expanded correspondent duties on The Insider
and Entertainment Tonight
. On March 8, 2010, Tom Bergeron
announced on Good Morning America
that his new co-host is Season 7
champion Brooke Burke
.
Len Goodman
, Bruno Tonioli
, and Carrie Ann Inaba
continue as the judges this season.
Season 10 has 11 contestants. This makes it the first season in the show's history to feature fewer contestants than the previous season. This is also the first season to have more female participants than males.
The cast was announced during the finale of The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love
on March 1, 2010, by Tom Bergeron and Melissa Rycroft
. Pro pairings were announced on Good Morning America
on March 2, 2010.
Damian Whitewood
, from the Broadway dance revue Burn the Floor, joined the list of professionals this season. Ashly DelGrosso Costa
, whose last season as a pro was Season 3
, returned. Also, Edyta Śliwińska
continued as the longest tenured professional on the show, having appeared on the first ten seasons.
This season, the Results Show was moved to 8 pm on Tuesdays instead of the usual 9 pm slot. This season also features other changes such as the “red room” being inside of the ballroom, enclosed by glass walls (affectionately referred to as "The Celebriquarium" by Bergeron), a balcony with a railing where the cast can stand and watch the performances live rather than on a monitor, and theme nights.
Pussycat Dolls lead singer, Nicole Scherzinger
won the competition over Olympic Gold Medalist Evan Lysacek
and ESPN Sportscaster Erin Andrews
who took second and third, respectively.
Notes:
Week 1: Nicole Scherzinger scored two 9s on her first dance (Viennese Waltz); only four other celebrities—Mario Lopez
, Sabrina Bryan
, Hélio Castroneves
, and Kristi Yamaguchi
,—have scored at least one 9 on a Week 1 dance.
Week 2: Nicole & Derek became the third couple to score 10s on Week 2 for their Jive. Stacy Keibler
received 10s for her Rumba in Season 2 and Joey Lawrence
received 10s for his Quickstep in Season 3. Buzz & Ashly scored a 12, the lowest Week 2 score in the show's history. Pamela & Damian landed in the bottom two despite being 17 points from last place. This is the highest difference between a bottom two couple's score and the lowest scoring couple of the week since Season 2 when Lisa Rinna
was eliminated despite being 12 points from last place. Also in the bottom two were Shannen & Mark, and they were shockingly eliminated despite being 12 points from the bottom.
Week 3: For Week 3, each dance had to tell a story. For the first time this season, Nicole & Derek were not in first place with the judges. They had points deducted from their Quickstep for breaking hold, doing a lift, and including too much non-Quickstep dancing. Evan & Anna scored 26 points and landed in first place. The bottom two couples were Buzz & Ashly and Jake & Chelsie. Buzz & Ashly were eliminated.
Week 4: For Week 4, all couples were scored twice for the same dance. They were scored on technique and then for performance. This split the leaderboard and showed all the couples what they have to work on. This was the first time in the show's history that couples were scored twice for one dance. Evan & Anna were at the top of the leaderboard again with 52 out of 60 points, and Kate & Tony were at the bottom with 32 out of 60. The bottom two was not revealed, and Aiden & Edyta were eliminated.
Week 5: For Week 5, each couple's dance was to a song from the movies. Nicole & Derek took back the lead with 29 out of 30, and Kate & Tony were at the bottom with 15 out of 30. Pamela & Damian and Kate & Tony were in the bottom two, and Kate & Tony were eliminated.
Week 6: Len Goodman gave a 7 to every dance except Chad Ochocinco's Argentine Tango which he gave an 8. Nicole & Derek were at the top of the leaderboard once again with 26 points for their Samba (again arousing Len's displeasure by not including basic Samba moves like voltas and bota fogos) and 10 points in the Swing Marathon. Jake & Chelsie were at the bottom with 21 points for their Samba and 4 points in the Swing Marathon. Niecy & Louis and Jake & Chelsie were in the bottom two, and Jake & Chelsie were eliminated.
Week 7: In the individual round, Evan & Anna received the first perfect score of the season for their Argentine Tango. Pam & Damian received the lowest score, 24 points, for their Waltz. Team Gaga (Nicole & Derek, Chad & Cheryl, Pamela & Damian) beat Team Madonna (Erin & Maksim, Evan & Anna, Niecy & Louis) 27 to 24. This left Evan & Anna and Nicole & Derek tied at the top with 54 points, and Niecy & Louis at the bottom with 49. Erin & Maksim were in the bottom two, despite having the second highest individual score for two weeks in a row, with Pamela & Damian, and Pamela & Damian were eliminated.
Week 8: Nicole & Derek received their first perfect score for their '50s Paso Doble and were at the top of the leaderboard with 59 out of 60. Niecy & Louis were at the bottom with 43 out of 60. Niecy & Louis and Chad & Cheryl were in the bottom two, and Niecy & Louis were eliminated.
Week 9: Evan & Anna and Nicole & Derek were tied at the top of the leaderboard with 59 out of 60. Chad & Cheryl were at the bottom with 52 out of 60. The bottom two was not revealed, and Chad & Cheryl were the 100th couple eliminated in the history of the show.
Week 10: On Monday, all three couples performed a Judges' redemption dance and a Freestyle performance. This is the second time that none of the Freestyle's received a 30, and the first time that the winning Freestyle did not receive a 10. On Tuesday, they all performed the Argentine Tango as their favorite and the judge's ranked them instead of giving individual scores. Erin & Maks were eliminated placing them in third place. Later, Evan and Anna danced a Quickstep that received 28 points. Nicole & Derek performed a Jive receiving 30 points. At the end of the show, Nicole & Derek were announced as the champions of Season 10 and Evan and Anna were the runners-up. Derek is the fourth two-time champion after Cheryl Burke
, his sister Julianne Hough
, and Mark Ballas
