World's busiest passenger air routes
Encyclopedia
The busiest air routes in the world appear to involve pairs of large cities in close proximity, but which rely more on air transport due to a lack of High Speed Rail, and the distance is large enough to discourage car driving. Several of the involved airports are located on islands without road connection to the mainland.
The following list is based on approximate flight numbers on certain routes (combined for both directions) as of January 2010. Included are routes with at least 300 flights per week. Note that these statistics do not consider the number of passengers carried, nor do they aggregate air movements made at other airports in the same city.
The following table list the most frequent non-stop flight
s between two regional airports in a country. The table data is based on scheduled information(based on OAG data) on working weekdays.
Sources: Eurostat: Air passenger transport in Europe in 2007 (which contains only routes with at least one EU airport), Norsk bane: Rapport mai 2009 (see page 12, based on Eurostat with domestic Norway added), and Eurostat: Air transport in the EU27. Domestic Russia, Ukraine and Turkey are not included. Based on airport statistics, no country in Europe other than EU countries, Norway, Russia, Ukraine and Turkey can have domestic routes with more than 1 million passengers.
