The airline was founded by Chandra Lie, Lie Hendri, Andi Halim and Fandy Lingga and named after the historical Srivijaya

 because the airlines had assessed the accuracy of petroleum payment. In 2008 Sriwijaya Air was awarded an award by Markplus & Co.. This award is a public appreciation of the services provided by Sriwijaya Air. Aircraft Maintenance are done by PT. ANI (Aero Nusantara Indonesia).

At the Paris Air Show 2011, Sriwijaya Air announced that they agreed to buy 20 Embraer 190 jets, with purchase rights of 10 more.

Sriwijaya Air has bought (12-years lease to purchase) 12 used Boeing B737-500 with total value $84 million for replacing all current Boeing B737-200. The delivery has been done since April 2011 up to December 2011.

Today, Sriwijaya Air is categorized as Medium Service Airline serves only light snacks. Sriwijaya Air is planning to expand into full-service flights in 2013 which should have at least 31 airplanes with a business lounge and meals for passengers.

Accidents and incidents

On 27 August 2008 a Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-200 operating as Flight 290 overran the runway at Jambi, Sumatra. There were eleven injuries and no fatalities.
