Thailand vehicle license plates are the license plates attached to most motorized road vehicles in Thailand
, which are required by law. Thai license plates display the name of the province where the vehicle was registered. The owner must register the car in the province where he lives; this can be a different province from where he has his official residency (as shown in the house register). If the title to the car is transferred to someone else, and the new owner lives in a different province, the number usually changes.
The international vehicle registration code for Thailand is T.
The older Thai vehicle license plate format, used between April 1, 1997 to December 31, 2010, have two consonants of the Thai alphabet

Some two letter combinations are not used because they are bad words when spelled. For example, "จน" means poor, "ตก" means fail or fall, and "ศพ" means corpse. This basic format is used by 8 different types of cars or automobiles, although there are variations in plate types.

There are a plan to add a number before the first Thai alphabet, after license plate numbers of Bangkok are full. For example : It starts from "1 กก 1" to "1 กก 9999", then starts at "1 กข 1", and continue again. This plan is finally cancelled and replaced by a all-new design.

When car-users using registered cars temporarily outside Thailand, they may have English temporary plates. The English plates are the same number as the real plates, and used for that car only. The plate has "THAILAND" at the bottom, instead of a Province name. It also has a province number code at the right side of the "THAILAND" word.

Common types
From 2011 the license plate in Bangkok is changed to same pattern to embassy plate (see below) but are white background with black text. 20% of cars in Bangkok have changed to this type. Started using on January 1, 2011, and transition will finish in 2014. License plates issued after March 2011 is issued in new design. New plates does not have location, and the style is "ก 01-1111" to "ฮ 999-9999". Temporary plates
New cars not yet registered or which are waiting for permanent license plates may have red temporary plates. They usually use the old style of plates.
