was escorted off the stage at the MAPI pageant rehearsal after protesting irregularities. Apparently, the delegates had been told that the rehearsal would just be a "run through" and so many of them declined to wear makeup. However, when they hit the stage, they realized that the rehearsal was being taped for television, and judges were present at the rehearsal. Many of the delegates felt uncomfortable about the situation because they were not at their best, but instead of protesting they complained backstage. However, Miss Jamaica decided to take matters into her own hands and she interrupted the taping by walking across the stage to the microphone and loudly protesting. She was immediately escorted off stage. The judges were eventually removed from the rehearsal.

There were several developments at MAPI that left the delegates unhappy. The decision to cut from 52 to 5 finalists did not go down well. Many of the delegates wept when they heard the news. There was also confusion over whether evening gown or costume would be judged toward the final score. The Chinese were saying costume would be judged but the Filipinos were saying evening gown would be judged. The delegates never went on stage individually in their evening gowns but only in groups of eight and then it was announced who won the award. MAPI had agreed to pay the airline costs and accommodations for the delegates but MAPI failed to purchase tickets for certain delegates due to MAPI not properly informing its national directors of a visa deadline.
