This list of tallest buildings in the Philippines ranks skyscraper
s in the Philippines
by height. The tallest building in the Philippines is the completed 73-storey The Gramercy Residences
in Makati, which rises 302 m (990.8 ft). The metropolitan area with the most number of skyscrapers in the Philippines is clearly Metro Manila
, followed by Metro Cebu
. The skyscrapers of Metro Manila are, for the most part, clustered in many locations although three areas are distinct for having the largest clusters in the metropolis. The first and biggest is the Makati Central Business District in Makati, followed by the Ortigas Center Business District
in Pasig and Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
Areas in Metro Manila where many skyscrapers can also be seen are: Rockwell Center
in Makati; Bay City
in Pasay City
; Cybergate City and Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong; Araneta Center
, Eastwood City
, Loyola Heights and South Triangle in Quezon City
; Malate District
in Manila
and Alabang in Muntinlupa, and outside Metro Manila are in the cities of Cebu
, Davao
and Cagayan de Oro
. The tallest building outside Metro Manila is the 165-meter Crown Regency Hotel
in Cebu City
. The history of highrise buildings in the Philippines probably began with the construction of the six-storey Manila Hotel
in 1912, which is regarded to be the first true modern high-rise building in the country. The constructions of high-rise buildings also shifted from Manila
to its surrounding area, including the transformation of Makati into the country's financial and business center in the 1950s.
The location of the Philippines within the Pacific Ring of Fire
, in which the country is prone to earthquakes, makes it hard for the architects to construct such high skyscrapers in the country. But scientists are still determining some possible technologies that can be used to make the high-rise buildings survive even the strongest earthquakes, which is now being applied to some of the skyscrapers currently being built.
Although there were numerous high-rise buildings standing in Metro Manila, the first skyscraper (150 meters and above) to rise in the Philippines was during the completion of the 44-storey Pacific Plaza Condominium in 1992, which has a 161-meter architectural top height. In September 2011, currently The Gramercy Residences
is the highest and topped-out reaching the 73rd floor. Upon its completion and grand opening in 2012, it will become the Philippines' first supertall and highest completed building, surpassing the previous title holder, PBCom Tower
. It was announced to have 73 floors above ground with a total height of 302 meters (990.8 feet) from ground to its architectural top.
