(APHIS) approved the first canine influenza vaccine. This vaccine must be given twice initially with a 2 week break and then annually thereafter. Because any vaccine can have negative side effects on some dogs, many dog owners are choosing not to vaccinate due to the fact that most dogs recover from the flu with mild symptoms and research indicates that after a dog has recovered from canine influenza, immunity appears to last at least 2 years.
