Jiangnan has been a leading region of China for at least 1000 years, with its strong economy and human resources. Although only constituting 5% of area in China, it has been historically responsible for a significant amount of the Chinese GDP. The intellectual life of Jiangnan has been highly distinguished throughout Chinese history and greatly influenced Chinese culture as a whole.

, Jiangnan became home to a large and important Muslim communities. Taozhou was settled by the Muslim troops, who constructed a mosque in 1379 during the Ming dynasty.

Ethnic Han Chinese from the Yangtze delta region migrated to Seng ge gshong "at the turn of" the 1400s. Seng ge gshong was renamed Wutun due to these colonists. During the Qianlong reign this migration was recorded in the Xunhua zhi. Wutun is located in Qinghai
