In 2009, North High was awarded a grade of "A" by the Florida Department of Education. North was the only school in the Lee County School District to be awarded an A rating for both 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 academic school years.

On December 7, 2009, North High launched a new version of its school web site. With the new site, students at North are given the ability to create and manage online student portfolios, allowing them to post work done during the school year. History

North Fort Myers High School was established in 1962 and renovated in 1995. The school has received a grade of "A" from the state of Florida for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic school years, and is the only school in Lee County to do so. The school currently houses approximately 1,575 students. From 2002-09, North High was the number one chosen high school in the West Zone. Incoming freshmen have the opportunity to attend an orientation camp in August, where students learn about North High programs, clubs, and school traditions.

In 2010, Thirty eight students at North Fort Myers High School earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams, up from fourteen students in 2009. This includes six students that earned the highest award, the AP Scholar with Distinction.

AICE Diploma

The AICE Diploma requires passing exams in at least six courses (credits). Each Cambridge AS Level Exam counts as one full credit. A Cambridge A Level Exam counts as a double credit qualification. Students must pass at least one exam in each of the three subject areas (Mathematics & Sciences, Languages and Arts & Humanities) and an additional three examinations in any area.

Students must take at least one class from each of the 3 subject groups, the class choice is up to them. The remaining classes can be made up from any combination the student chooses.

AICE in Florida

The Florida Legislature has identified AICE as a graduation option and acceleration mechanism through which high school students can be awarded up to 30 hours of college credit. Students earning the AICE Diploma qualify for the maximum Florida Bright Futures tuition scholarship and students completing the curriculum can earn the Florida Medallion Scholars Tuition Award.

Center for Arts & Media

North High is the official Arts Center in the West Zone. The Arts Center offers a variety of courses in visual, performing, and media arts. Students who are currently enrolled in high school or who are currently enrolled in eighth grade are eligible to audition and participate in the arts program. Admission

Admission to the North Fort Myers High School Center for Arts and Media West Zone program is by audition only. In addition to the Arts & Media application, a West Zone school application should also be completed according to the school's published timeline. Should a student be accepted into the Arts & Media program following their audition, that student may be released from the school assigned by School Assignment in order to attend the North Fort Myers High School Center for Arts and Media program. All students enrolling in the arts and media program must complete four semesters in the program to be considered for a waiver should they choose to leave the program. (School District of Lee County Administrative Regulation 1.63)

Auditions

To attend the North Fort Myers High School Center for Arts and Media, students are selected by an audition process for one of the seven majors. Arts and Media students take a full academic program throughout the day integrated with arts and media classes that will be offered in two-period blocks. A graduate of North Fort Myers High School Center for Arts and Media is expected to be prepared to continue in the art and media field or to succeed in the finest liberal arts colleges.

Auditions for the Center for Arts and Media are held every spring. North High currently offers five tracks within the Arts & Media program: Dance, Media Arts, Musical Arts, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts. Students interested in becoming part of one or more programs must first pick up an application from the school. Students who are currently enrolled in a West Zone high school or who are currently enrolled in eighth grade at a West Zone middle school are eligible to audition and participate in the Center for Arts and Media.

Animation and Game Development Academy

North High's Animation and Game Development Academy (AGDA) introduces students to the fundamental principles of game and simulation development. This program is a four-year sequence of project-based courses oriented to game and simulation development that align relevant academic, employment, and workplace standards.

AGDA is designed to prepare a student for a career as a Game/Simulation Designer, Digital Media Artist, and Digital Media Specialist. The content includes practical experiences in game/simulation conceptualization, design, storyboarding, development methodologies, audio–sound effects design and production, video–special effects design and production, and implementation issues.

At the center of the AGDA program is 3ds Max, an industry-leading gaming and animation software program that has been used to develop many blockbuster films including: Jurassic Park

Business & Technology Education

The focus of North High's Technology & Career Education Department is to make students aware of the many changes in technology. Through its courses in Accounting Applications, Computing for College and Careers, Administrative Office Technology, Digital Design, and Cooperative Business Education, instruction is provided that helps the students meet the many challenges in today’s society. Completion of a three-course program can qualify a student for the Bright Futures-Gold Seal Scholarship.

North High places a special emphasis on technology and its use as an accelerator for teachers, staff, and students. There are currently over 600 computers on campus available for student use. The school provides eight dedicated computer labs for its engineering, technology, and video production classes, as well as five additional labs that can be reserved by teachers whose rooms are not equipped with computers.

 classes are designed to teach students satisfactory skills and gain knowledge of the art and science of Digital SLR Photography. Students will develop technical skills that lead to the success in Digital SLR camera operation, as well as a working knowledge of the language of photography.

The courses allow students to develop a personal awareness and knowledge of photography as a communication process. Students are taught how to create, manipulate, and optimize images for print and the Web using Adobe Photoshop CS4. Industry certifications

During the 2009-10 school year, students at North earned a combined total of 730 industry certifications, including 271 certifications for Adobe Photoshop CS4 and 356 certifications for Microsoft Office 2007.

Overall, North High students earned more certifications in Adobe Flash (78), Adobe Photoshop (271), and Microsoft Office 2007 (356) than any other school in Lee County, respectively. Students also earned forty (21) certifications in Adobe Dreamweaver and a total of four certifications in AutoCAD 2010. 83 students earned a Master Certification in Microsoft Office, meaning they gained certification in four separate Office 2007 applications: Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.

Student computers are equipped with the latest software from companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and AutoDesk, including Office 2007, AutoDesk 3dsMax, AutoCAD 2009, and the complete Adobe CS4 Master Collection. Currently, North High employs seven (7) Adobe Certified Educators, as well as five (5) educators certified in Office 2007.

Students who enroll in technology electives use various software applications, including Office 2007, Adobe CS4, AutoCAD 2009, and Studio 3ds Max. North High is an official testing center for Adobe, Microsoft and Certiport, and offers students the ability to gain valuable certifications in applications such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, and the full Microsoft Office suite of applications.

Technology

There are currently over 500 computers on the North High campus that are accessible by students. Almost all of those are located in student classrooms that have been set up specifically for use as a computer lab. The classroom labs vary in size, but most are set up with 32 stations.

Shared computer labs

North High currently has seven computer labs available to all teachers, on a reservation basis. The lab schedule(s) are managed via North High's Intranet web site, which allows teachers to browse the various lab schedules, reserve labs for specific dates and times, and also cancel reservations if the need arises. Three of the seven labs are located next to the school's Media Center, in an area the students have nicknamed "The SuperLab".

The media center

The North High Media Center currently has 120 computers for student use. The center's architecture is somewhat unique for a high school, the most obvious being the 30 foot ceilings. On the far wall is a mural

The computers in the Media Center are organized into four different lab areas, and can be used by teachers as part of a scheduled class, or by individual students who have permission to be in the Media Center.

The SuperLab

The SuperLab currently has 100 machines for student use. The lab is grouped in three smaller labs, which can be used independently or together as part of a larger presentation. In addition to student workstations, each lab also contains individual teacher stations and network printers.

Although it is open to all teachers, the SuperLab is primarily reserved by Reading and English classes who work with TeenBiz3000, a web-based, individualized reading and writing instruction solution that has been implemented district-wide.

Knights Scholar Mentoring Program

The mission of the Knights Scholar program is to provide academic mentorship and a positive role model to the students of North Fort Myers High School. Its purpose is to provide leadership, guidance, and support to students through a mentoring relationship between freshman and upper-class students.

  • North High is the only school in the Lee County School District to receive a grade of “A” for both the 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic school years. In addition, North High was the most chosen high school in the West Zone for eight years straight. This is a wonderful testament to our pride and family traditions.
  • There are a total of 84 teachers on staff at North High, and 31 (37%) hold a master’s degree or higher. In addition, ten (10) teachers (12%) are adjunct professors at the local community college. With so many teachers possessing this qualification, North High is able to offer more dual enrollment

  • North High maintains nine (9) dedicated computer-lab classrooms, and an additional six (6) labs are available for all teachers on a reservation basis. Each lab is equipped for whole-class Internet instruction or for individual research.
  • In addition to hardware, student computers are equipped with the latest software from companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and AutoDesk, including Office 2007, AutoDesk 3dsMax 2010, Maya 2010, AutoCAD 2010 and Architecture 2010, and the complete Adobe CS4 Master Collection. Currently, North employs nine (9) Adobe Certified Educators, as well as five (5) educators certified in Office 2007. North is also an official Certiport Testing Center, as well as a testing center for Adobe CS4 products inlucding After Effects, Dreamweaver, Flash, InDesign, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro.
