Due to its location at the city end of Melbourne's busiest group of railway lines a large number of services pass through East Richmond although only a limited number stop, largely because of its proximity to Richmond

. Quadruplication though the station was carried out in the 1960s, with the track being lowered 1.2 metres though the station, and a new citybound platform. The first extra track was commissioned on 1 August 1966 and the second track on 9 January 1967, along with the new platform.
