History

Auvernier is first mentioned in 1011 as Averniacum. The municipality was formerly known by its German name Avernach, however, that name is no longer used.

Geography

Auvernier has an area, , of 1.7 square kilometre. Of this area, 0.79 square kilometre or 47.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.06 square kilometre or 3.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.8 square kilometre or 47.6% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.04 km² (9.9 acre) or 2.4% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km² (2.5 acre) or 0.6% is unproductive land.

Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 1.2% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 19.6% and transportation infrastructure made up 20.8%. Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 1.2% of the area while parks, green belts and sports fields made up 4.8%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 0.0% is used for growing crops, while 46.4% is used for orchards or vine crops. Of the water in the municipality, 1.8% is in lakes and 0.6% is in rivers and streams.
