The event, transmitted for more than 27 consecutive hours through Chilean TV channels grouped into ANATEL, began at 2200hrs on 28 November from the Teatro Teleton, from where came most of the event, together with various links to other major events throughout the country. The closing of Telethon 2008, as in the past 13 years, was carried out at the National Stadium of Chile, with a great show in which Chilean and international artists participated.

The official slogan of this campaign was "Thanks to you, we can continue" and the focus was on the commemoration of the 30 years since the first telethon, held in 1978. Catalina Aranda was selected as the poster girl

Background

After the success achieved during the Telethon 2007 campaign - and after 30 years of existence - the solidarity campaign decided to mark some milestones in the new edition of 2008. Mario Kreutzberger, the presenter and leader of the event, expressed in May, 2008 that the principal objective of the campaign would be to show the success achieved during its three decades of existence through the testimonies of health professionals, patients and their families, as well as the artists and all of the community that has actively participated.

The principal leaders of the Telethon Foundation mentioned the importance of the collection of funds in this event, in spite of the presidential elections that happened in December 2009 in Chile and prevented the solidarity campaign during that year, following the line of the Telethon Foundation to avoid the use of this campaign for political purposes. This action has generated on multiple occasions economic problems for the organisation as well as the enormously high cost of the treatments and the growing demand of new disabled patients, as well as the planning and design of new rehabilitation centres. For this reason, the participating presenters have insisted that the audience increase their donations to face up to the following two years.

In October 2007 the Telethon Foundation made public two large projects that it would be bringing together during this campaign. The first would be the enlarging of the Telethon Institute in Santiago which involved the construction of a total of 15,281 square metres additional to the building, which was in the evaluation stage with the Regional Metropolitan Government. The second would be the renovation of the Telethon Theatre on the marking of the celebration of the bicentennial of the founding of Chile. The plans were for the construction of a new area with 1,600 seats, with space and technology to accommodate whatever number of artists. In addition there would be an underground area of 4 floors, an event centre and a 9 storey tower.

Additionally the campaign will be seeking to collect funds for the construction of four rehabilitation institutes in the cities of Calama

. In spite of the donations from the Telethon 2007 for the construction of the Telethon Institute in Calama, various problems have delayed their application. Some days before the Telethon event the government donated, through the Ministerio de Bienes Nacionales (Eng: Ministry of Social Welfare), the land destined to be used for the centres at Calama and Coihaique.

The Campaign

In early June, 2008, the Telethon Foundation launched a competition called "Painting the Telethon" under the patronage of the Ministry of Education and the Faculty of Arts in Chile University and the sponsorship of various companies. The competition was looking to bring the campaign closer to young children of pre-school and junior school age, allowing the best work to form part of the promotional campaign of Telethon 2008. The last day of entry was 11 July 2008 and the prize- giving was on the 19th of the following August.

Originally the public launch of Telethon 2008 would have been on the 30th, May of that year in the
"Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna" school in Santiago de Chile with the presence of the spokesman and leader of the campaign, Don Francisco. However, as the result of a period of official mourning announced the day before by the Government of Chile after the air accident in Panama that cost the lives of the then Director General of the Carabineros of Chile, José Alejandro Bernales, and another 10 people, the Foundation decided to suspend this activity and launch it in a more private manner.

During the month of August, when Chile was celebrating "Solidarity Month", Telethon launched an advertising campaign that, through the media of communication and in a professional manner, gave thanks to all those who had made possible the development and growth of the institution during its 30 years of existence. The campaign, named "National Pride", extended through the whole month of August, delivering the message "Thanks to you" to every one of the members of this charity. For this members of the Telethon Institute for Children's Rehabilitation travelled Chile from north to south giving thanks to the community, the regional governors and the communications media. From this month the top-spots on television broadcast the phrase "Thanks to you and all Chileans for giving us these first 30 years of Telethon".

The official launch of Telethon 2008 finally happened on the 3rd of September in the Telethon Theatre, it relied on the attendance of the senior authorities of the Institution, government representatives, the communications media, artists, and various people linked to the charitable work. During the event Catalina Aranda was introduced as the poster boy for the campaign. The anthem "Gracias a ti" (Eng:Thanks to you) was sung by well-known, national artists. The campaign publicity that would commence during the following weeks and broadcast by the communications media was developed by Prolam, Young & Rubicam Publicity Agency and included the help of the Chilean film-maker Andrés Wood.

In addition, on the 5th September the progamme "Telethon Ambassadors" was introduced. An initiative organised by the Telethon Foundation that looked to change the new social marketing project into an inclusive project of corporate social responsibility

. The event, put on in the Telethon Theatre with the attendance of workers from the campaign's sponsoring companies who were designated as official representatives of the Foundation in the company with the goal of actively supporting the creation and development of advertising initiatives for Telethon 2008 in their workplace.

Final stage

In spite of the official presentation of the solidarity campaign being made in September, and from that time various advertisements could be seen promoting the event, on 27 October the Telethon 2008 campaign was relaunched from the Hyatt Hotel Santiago, with the presence of don Francisco and various Chilean artists. The relaunch, which commenced immediately after the municipal elections, marked the final stage of the advertising campaign of this edition.

During the event the structure of the show, to be televised on 28 and 29 November, was introduced. It would include numerous Chilean and international artists and the popular sections like "Vedetón", (Eng: Cabaret) "Bailetón", (Eng: Big Dance) and "Levántate papito" (Eng: Get up ?), as well as comedy acts and a showball match organized by the Chilean ex-footballer Iván Zamorano

. Within this plan a huge advertising sign would be inaugurated at midday on 28 October in part of Plaza Badequeno, (a traditional meeting place in Santiago de Chile) to remind people of the days and seconds until the event begins.

During November, the classic Telethon Tour developed across the country, headed by Don Francisco and largely supported by various entertainers and artists who came along voluntarily. On the tour there were several successes which filled the front pages of the daily papers linked to the spectacle; as well there was the announcement of the inauguration of the Rehabilitation Centre in Valdivia for 2010 and the karate attack by a woman on the guitarist of the group Chancho en Piedra

. Hours before the start of the telethon, the businessman Pedro Lizana said that the telethon is a national disgrace, because disability is a matter for the state and is not a spectacle, the same accusations that the communist leader, Gladys Marín, had made in 2002.
