In 1954 it started a bachelor's degree program in Mining Engineering. In 1961 it was renamed the West Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology. During the 1960s, bachelor's degree courses were started in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum and Gas Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Architecture, and City and Regional Planning.

Location

The campus is situated on Grand Trunk Road, Begum Pura, Lahore (31°34′42.34"N 74°21′31.90"E) and is within a few kilometers of the Shalimar Gardens

Campuses

Besides the main campus in Lahore, a sub-campus known as University City campus (also in Lahore) was established at Kala Shah Kaku. It is called UET Lahore City campus.
Besides Kala Shah Kaku campus, other campuses includes RCET (Rachna College of Engnieering and Technology) which is a constituent college of UET Lahore. Rachna College derives its name from the lands stretching between the rivers Ravi and Chenab.

The campus of Rachna College of Engineering and Technology, Gujranwala is spread over an area of about 74 acres (299,467.6 m²), surrounded by a canal on the south and lush agricultural land on the remaining three sides. The college is on the left bank of Nokhar Branch Canal about seven kilometers off (East) G.T. Road, between Gakhar and Wazirabad. It was inaugurated by Lt. Gen. (R) Khalid Maqbool Governor of Punjab on 15 January 2003, with the induction of the first batch of 105 students for B.Sc. in Electrical, Mechanical, and Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. The college started a B.Sc. (Hons) Degree in Computer Science Department in October 2008.

The university has established a Directorate of Research, Extension and Advisory Services which strives for the promotion and organization of research activities. The Al-Khwarizmi Institute of Computer Sciences is a notable name in research activity in computer sciences in Pakistan.

Co-curricular and extracurricular activities

The university has a sports complex, consisting of a swimming pool, tennis court, table tennis court, squash court and a cricket stadium that is also used for athletics. The university has several football grounds.

Apart from sports-related facilities, there are societies to promote co-curricular activities. The Environmental and Horticultural Society (EHS) works for the betterment of the environment. UET's Blood Donor Society is among the newest societies of UET and now has more than 4000 blood donors and more than 25 members. UET's Debating Society holds several national titles.

 of Engineering Science is the central library for the university with a seating capacity for 400 readers and more than 125,000 volumes of books, 22,000 volumes of bound serials and more than 600 scattered issues of scientific and technical serials on diverse fields. Besides Engineering Subjects, considerable reading materials on Basic Sciences, Social Science, Literature and Islamic Studies are also available. Most of the collection covers Pure Science, Applied Sciences & Technology.

The central Library of the University has the honour of having recently been chosen by the Higher Education Commission to serve as the primary resource center for engineering & technical education in Pakistan.
