In the 2003–04 season, he returned to Boavista after a two-year loan spell. Meireles made his debut in the Portuguese first league on 17 August 2003 against Benfica, and was chosen as the man of the match

Meireles is primarily a central midfielder, but has on occasion played at the right side of midfield at Liverpool. His versatility is marked by him playing at both a deep and attacking role in the middle of the park, having mainly played in a defensive role while at Porto. Meireles has scored several goals from distance for Porto, Liverpool and the national team and likes to use his right foot for attempts at target.

Personal Life

Meireles is married to Ivone, formerly Ivone Viana, with whom he has a daughter, Lara, born in 2005. The couple met while Meireles was a junior at Boavista, where Viana's cousin was also a player. The pair married at a lavish ceremony in Barcelos, Portugal in August, 2008.
