The municipality was part of the old Nyon District until it was dissolved on 31 August 2006, and Tannay became part of the new district of Nyon.

Tannay has an area, , of 1.8 square kilometre. Of this area, 0.85 square kilometre or 46.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.25 square kilometre or 13.7% is forested.
