Geography

Nyon has an area, , of 307.35 square kilometres (118.7 sq mi). Of this area, 129.16 km² (49.9 sq mi) or 42.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while 137.52 km² (53.1 sq mi) or 44.7% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 39.26 km² (15.2 sq mi) or 12.8% is settled (buildings or roads) and 1.53 km² (0.590736302646579 sq mi) or 0.5% is unproductive land.

Of the population in the district 11,411 or about 18.4% were born in Nyon and lived there in 2000. There were 11,760 or 19.0% who were born in the same canton, while 16,519 or 26.7% were born somewhere else in Switzerland, and 19,711 or 31.8% were born outside of Switzerland.

In there were 642 live births to Swiss citizens and 358 births to non-Swiss citizens, and in same time span there were 357 deaths of Swiss citizens and 54 non-Swiss citizen deaths. Ignoring immigration and emigration, the population of Swiss citizens increased by 285 while the foreign population increased by 304. There were 59 Swiss men and 61 Swiss women who emigrated from Switzerland. At the same time, there were 916 non-Swiss men and 863 non-Swiss women who immigrated from another country to Switzerland. Mergers and name changes

On 1 September 2006, the former Aubonne district (District d'Aubonne), Nyon district (District de Nyon) and Rolle district (District de Rolle) were dissolved and portions of the old districts were merged into the new Nyon district.

In the 2009/2010 school year there were a total of 10,228 students in the local and district school systems. In the Vaud cantonal school system, two years of non-obligatory pre-school are provided by the political districts. During the school year, the district provided pre-school care for a total of 1,249 children. There were 563 (45.1%) children who received subsidized pre-school care. There were 5,538 students in the primary school program, which last four years. The obligatory lower secondary school program lasts for six years and there were 4,501 students in those schools. There were also 189 students who were home schooled or attended another non-traditional school.
