Rob's son Richard was kidnapped, tortured and murdered in 1983, the final victim in the so-called 'Family Murders'.

In October 2010, Kelvin announced that he would be retiring from Nine News Adelaide. He presented his final bulletin on New Year's Eve ending his 32-year career with the Nine Network
