The municipality is located in the See-Gaster Wahlkreis on a terrace above and east of the Linth
valley. It consists of the Haufendorf
village (an irregular, unplanned and quite closely packed village, built around a central square) of Rieden and scattered, individual farm houses.

, and Gommiswald
are considering a merger for 1 January 2013 into a new municipality with an undetermined name.
