Real Radio is a network of adult contemporary independent local radio
stations in England
, Scotland
and Wales
and is operated by GMG Radio. Each station broadcasts local breakfast through to drive time shows and network programming in the evening and through the night. The five stations in the United Kingdom operate under the Real Radio banner as:
Real Radio broadcasts a mix of popular music from the 80’s to the present day and regionally focused chat, news and sport for the 25-54 year old market. Real Radio is available on FM across South and West Wales, Central Scotland, across the North West, North East and South and West Yorkshire, as well as in most major UK regions on DAB digital radio online while Wales is also available on Sky and Freeview. www.realradio.co.uk
The brand was established in South Wales by John Myers, based on the Century Radio brand that he set up for Border Television. GMG later purchased the remaining Century stations (North East and North West), re branding them into Real in 2009.
Real Radio has news on every hour, 24 hours a day, provided by Real Radio journalists. In addition English and Welsh stations also take Sky News Radio
after midnight, while Scottish station take a live bulletins provided by Real Radio journalists.
In addition to the above listed stations, Real Radio also operated a digital-only station, Real Radio (Digital), which broadcast on DAB in several areas where Real did not broadcast on analogue, and also broadcast on Sky Digital. In 2008, Real Digital closed, replaced by the new Jazz FM (UK) in several locations (it was replaced by Rock Radio
in the North East and by a relay of Real Radio Wales on Sky).
