with a flower grown from a drop of sunlight. The medicine restores the queen's health and bestows magical healing powers to the unborn child. However, an evil and jealous woman named Mother Gothel kidnaps the little princess, Rapunzel, soon after birth, as she had originally hoarded the flower's special abilities to keep herself young and beautiful for hundreds of years. Mother Gothel locks Rapunzel in a tower away from the outside world and tells Rapunzel that the world is dangerous and full of horrible, selfish people.

Rapunzel, believing her mother's lies, stays within her tower, yet every year on her birthday, Rapunzel witnesses a festival of floating lights in a nearby kingdom, unaware that it is in remembrance of the night she was stolen and the hope that she will one day return. She dreams of one day going to the kingdom to see the festival. Finally on her eighteenth birthday, she gathers the courage to ask Mother Gothel to take her to the festival, yet Mother Gothel bluntly refuses, and orders Rapunzel never to ask to leave the tower again. That same day, Flynn Rider, a charming and handsome thief, decides to use Rapunzel's tower as a hiding place after stealing the crown jewels. Rapunzel captures him, takes the satchel containing the jewels, and holds Flynn hostage until he agrees to help her escape the tower and escort her to the festival in exchange for the satchel. To distract her mother, Rapunzel asks for a special paint made from seashells for her birthday, which would take three days to retrieve.

Rapunzel and Flynn leave the tower, and end up involved in several mishaps, and grow to respect and depend upon each other. At one point, Rapunzel reveals her backstory to Flynn. According to Mother Gothel, people wanted Rapunzel because of her magic hair, and so she was locked in the tower for her safety. However, if her hair is ever cut, it would lose its power and turn brown. Mother Gothel, having learned of Rapunzel's escape, follows and confronts Rapunzel. When Rapunzel refuses to go back home, Mother Gothel gives her the satchel telling her that it is the only reason Flynn agreed to take her to the Festival. Mother Gothel also hires two thugs for a larger scheme.

During the festival Rapunzel and Flynn grow closer and begin to fall in love, before he takes her out on a boat to finally see the floating lights. Now sure that Flynn's feelings for her are genuine, Rapunzel gives back his Satchel. After returning to the shore, Mother Gothel enacts her plan, and the thugs attempt to kidnap Rapunzel for her hair, and frame Flynn as having abandoned her and running off with the satchel. Mother Gothel fakes Rapunzel's rescue and takes Rapunzel back to the tower.

Rapunzel, heartbroken over Flynn's betrayal, agrees with Mother Gothel to never leave the tower again. However, after examining the kingdom's emblem

in everything she has painted. This awakens Rapunzel's early memories, and she realizes that she is the kingdom's lost Princess. She confronts Mother Gothel, and after learning the truth she swears that she will no longer be used by her "Mother" anymore.

Flynn soon arrives, and attempts to rescue Rapunzel. However, he finds her bound and gagged and is fatally stabbed by Mother Gothel in the process. Rapunzel, hoping to use her hair to heal him, bargains with Mother Gothel that should she let her help Flynn, she will go with her willingly. Mother Gothel agrees, yet Flynn would rather die than let Rapunzel sacrifice her freedom and cuts her hair, causing it to lose its power and turn brown. As the hair's magic disappears, Mother Gothel rapidly ages and her body crumbles into dust. Now with no way to heal him, Rapunzel helplessly holds Flynn as he dies from his wounds shortly afterwards, but not before confirming his love for her. However, in her sorrow Rapunzel is able to finish her healing incantation and a single tear drop revives him.

Flynn reunites Rapunzel with her parents and among a kingdom wide celebration she takes her rightful place as Princess. Flynn informs the audience that Rapunzel ruled the kingdom fairly and wisely for many years and was beloved by the people. He also reveals that some years later after the celebration, he proposed and the two were married and are living happily ever after.
