The bus operators of Penang have been facing financial difficulties for many years but the situation became critical when one of Penang's largest and best known bus companies, the Yellow Bus Company Berhad, which had been operating for 58 years, suddenly stopped running on 1 January 2004, leaving thousands of commuters stranded. Rapid Penang currently operates 280 buses on Penang island and Seberang Prai and is set to expand its fleet to 350 by June. "If we expand into the NCER, we are likely to add a further 250 new buses to our fleet," Azhar said.

Rapid Penang CEO Azhar Ahmad also added that 200 more buses will be brought into the line of buses on October 2011, making the number of buses at that time to 550 buses. He also said that since its founding in 31 July 2007, Rapid Penang has successfully increased usage of public transportation from 30,000 commuters a day to 75,000 commuters a day.
