Miguel I's eldest sister was officially heir to the throne since his brother Pedro (I of Brazil, IV of Portugal) had abdicated in 1826, and Miguel was acclaimed king in 1828. She never adopted the new style Princess Royal, preferring the old Portuguese traditional style the Princess. Also known as Teresa, Princess of Beira, as she had been born Princess of Beira, title she kept till her male brother's birth. She was officially heir to the Portuguese throne while Miguel reigned unmarried, and her son Dom Sebastião de Bragança e Borbom, Infant of Portugal, was the heir after her, till the end of the Portuguese Civil War in 1834.
