Ryotaro Nogami
is a young man with an intense streak of bad luck. Having lost his parents at a young age, he lived with his grandmother and older sister Airi, visiting his parents' library/café called the Milk Dipper as often as possible. He also kept a photograph of his parents until he lost it, regretting that day ever since. He and Airi eventually reopen the Milk Dipper along with Airi's fiance. However, her fiance mysteriously disappears a month before their wedding and she is suddenly struck with amnesia of all events relating to him. Ryotaro begins to take care of Airi and help at the Milk Dipper. He makes sure that she is always happy and never reminded of her fiance and become burdened by the loss, even though he questions if it is right for Airi to forget completely. Ryotaro will help anyone in need if he has the ability to do so, regardless of his bad luck; he also refuses to accept self-sacrifice as the only means to protect others.One day early in 2007, Ryotaro comes across the Rider Pass, the DenLiner, Hana, and becomes possessed by the Imagin

Momotaros. Hana discovers that Ryotaro is a Singularity Point, a human immune to changes in history as well as the lure of the Imagin's wish granting. This traps Momotaros in Ryotaro's body and enables both to become Kamen Rider Den-O (Sword Form). As such, Ryotaro is drafted by the Owner of the DenLiner to become a keeper of space-time; Kamen Rider Den-O destroys Imagin that travel to the past to change the future, enabling that the future of the humans remains intact. Along the way, Ryotaro becomes contracted to the Imagin Urataros, Kintaros, and Ryutaros (collectively called the Tarōs), enabling Den-O to transform into additional forms.
Ryotaro also discovers the existence of Yuto Sakurai, the younger incarnation of his sister's fiance, and his Imagin partner Deneb who become Kamen Rider Zeronos

). It is also in this travel back in time that Ryotaro meets his younger self dubbed "Kotaro" who becomes Kamen Rider Mini Den-O to help with the fight. When three of the Tarōs' existence is threatened by their part in defeating Gaoh, Ryotaro's feelings for the friendship he has with them creates the K-Taros cellphone, bringing them back to life and allowing him to become Climax Form.
When Kai, the Singularity Point of the Imagin's future, appears to further his plan to destroy the Junction Point to ensure that the flow of time ensures that the Imagin will exist rather than humans, Ryotaro's sync with the Tarōs begins to fade, forcing him to fight on his own as Liner Form. As he eventually discovers that the Junction Point is the unborn child of Airi and Sakurai, Ryotaro discovers that they had sacrificed their love and marriage for the sake of their child through Airi's ownership of the ZeroLiner and that their child is none other than Ryotaro's travelling companion Hana (who has been de-aged and become known as Kohana). Ryotaro, the Tarōs, Yuto, and Deneb work together to save Hana and defeat Kai, ensuring that the Imagin will never exist. As Ryotaro begins to lament that he will never see the Tarōs again, they (along with Sieg and Deneb) make themselves known, having been saved due to their time with the Kamen Riders. The Owner tells Ryotaro that his work is done, and Ryotaro gladly relinquishes the Rider Pass, knowing that he will meet the Tarōs in the future.
Some time after this, Ryotaro is asked by the Owner to help in finding other Imagin who survived Kai's defeat and disappearance from history. It is during this time Ryotaro comes across both the evil Negataros

Alternate personalities
As a Singularity Point, Ryotaro can resist the control of an Imagin contracted to him, among other things, as long as he is conscious. Due to this unique attribute, he was given the power to become Den-O, a Kamen Rider who protects the timeline from the Imagins' actions. As Ryotaro continues on his mission, he meets multiple Imagin, each giving him a unique personality for the duration of their possession. Each of his personality changes affect the color of his eyes and a strand of his hair, changing its color and sometimes his appearance to match the Imagin.- When possessed by Momotaros, Ryotaro assumes the mannerisms of a self-absorbed punk. His hair spikes up slightly with a single red streak and he gains more muscular definition and the physical strength to go with it. He takes on an extremely rash and ignorant personality, exactly like Momotaros. This form is referred to in Japanese media as M-Ryotaro.
- When possessed by Urataros, Ryotaro assumes the mannerisms of a teen idol casanova with the right words to woo women and convince almost anybody. His hair is straight and calm and has a single blue streak going through it. He also wears a pair of black rimmed eyeglasses and sometimes a suave attire. He takes on a very professional and crafty personality, exactly like Urataros. This form is referred to in Japanese media as U-Ryotaro.
- When possessed by Kintaros, Ryotaro assumes the mannerisms of a martial artist. His hair grows such that he has a ponytail with a golden yellow streak through it. He takes on a very noble and firm personality, exactly like Kintaros. However, his increased strength often results in self-injury and clumsiness. His usual attire in this state is a yellow-and-black striped kimono. This form is referred to in Japanese media as K-Ryotaro.

This form is referred to in Japanese media as R-Ryotaro. - When possessed by Sieg, though they never forged a contract, Ryotaro assumes the mannerisms of a prince. His hair is styled in cornrows and has several white highlights with one longer white and black lock on the left side of his face, and a white feather boa appears around his neck. This form is referred to in Japanese media as W-Ryotaro (the W standing for "Wing").
- While Yuto is removed from time, Ryotaro gains a contract with Deneb, assuming the mannerisms of a butler while possessed by Deneb with an extremely polite and overly friendly personality. His hair grows out past shoulder length with two locks of hair on each side of his head. On the right side, the lock is a neon green with a darker green streak within it. This form is referred to in Japanese media as D-Ryotaro.
- When abducted by Shiro and possessed by the Ghost Imagin in the events of Final Countdown, Ryotaro's personality is overwritten by the evil Imagin's will. The Den-O Belt works by drawing in free energy from the surrounding area, allowing it to generate the Den-O suit, which consists of a soft but durable material called and tough armor called . As the name implies, Aura Skin and Armor are attuned to the wearer's individual aura; because of Ryotaro's weak will, he can only generate the basic Plat Form. However, possession by Imagin causes the Aura Skin and Armor to reconfigure themselves into a form that matches the Imagin's will, as well as generating a facemask called a .
Plat Form
Sword Form
is Kamen Rider Den-O's first (and most common) form, used when Ryotaro is possessed by Momotaros. In Sword Form, he uses the DenGasher as a standard sword-style weapon. Sword Form is the most balanced of all his forms, possibly because of Momotaros' prominence among the other Imagin. Momotaros himself once assumed Sword Form during the events of "Final Countdown" to battle Kamen Rider Yuuki. Every so often, Momotaros will develop a new that he uses to finish off Imagin, and has developed Parts 1, 2, 2' (2-dash), 3, 5, Special Version (used in "I'm Born!"), and the Imagin-assisted Final Version, although parts 2, 3, and 5 are essentially identical. Special Version is nearly identical to 2, 3, and 5, but uses a double Full Charge and only strikes the enemy on the rebound, while Final Version is an extended attack that uses the energy of the other Taros, Sieg, and Zeronos. Rod Form
is Kamen Rider Den-O's second form, used when Ryotaro is possessed by Urataros. In Rod Form, the DenGasher is transformed into a rod-style weapon. Rod Form gains the ability to move and breathe underwater, increased protection, and increased kicking power. But as a drawback, he loses physical strength and jumping height. Urataros himself assumed this form when he borrowed Ryotaro's Belt to fight off the Mole Imagin he tricked, and again during "Final Countdown" to fight the army of revived Imagin. This form is one of the least used of Den-O's forms, as Urataros rarely fights. However, whenever a fight occurs in the proximity of water, or if the other Imagin are unable to fight, Urataros will assist with his fishing skills. Ax Form
is Kamen Rider Den-O's third form, used when Ryotaro is possessed by Kintaros. In Ax Form, the DenGasher is transformed into an axe for short, close ranged attacks. Ax Form gains increased strength and defense, but as a result suffers with less speed and kicking power. This form is the physically strongest of the Den-O forms, due to Kintaros's own brute strength. Kintaros himself assumes this form by using the Den-O Belt to help Ryotaro fend off an army of Imagin in the past, and again during "Final Countdown" to fight off the army of revived Imagin. Kintaros tends to fight as Ax Form whenever he senses crying or he hears someone near Ryotaro say anything resembling the Japanese word for . Gun Form
is Kamen Rider Den-O's fourth form, used when Ryotaro is possessed by Ryutaros. In Gun Form, the DenGasher is transformed into a gun for short and long range attacks. Gun Form displays an increase in speed, power, and defense, easily making it the most superior of the four basic forms. Ryutaros tends to fight as Gun Form at his whim, as he is able to overpower the other three Tarōs and in some cases Ryotaro. However, he also tends to cause more damage than the other forms because of his low precision and the high power of his ammunition. Ryutaros himself once assumed Gun Form during the events of "Final Countdown" in order to battle the revived army of Imagin. It is also physically stronger than Climax Form and has the ability to use the wings to fly up and execute a stronger version of Climax Form's Rider Kick. and is Den-O's primary weapon. The DenGasher is composed of four separate parts (Sword, Gun, Ax, and Grip) that, when not in use, are attached to the Den-O Belt. Although the weapon configurations are not limited to a specific form of Den-O, there are certain combinations which function best with a corresponding form. Climax Form typically uses it in Sword Mode, although on one exception, he has used one of its other modes (Gun Mode, against the Armadillo Imagin). Liner Form can also use the DenGasher when the Den-Kamen Sword is unavailable. The following listed are the most commonly used ways to form each weapon, but each form also displays various variations in which the weapons are attached in fancy and tricky manners that differ from the norm.
- For Sword Form, the DenGasher is used in . It is formed by combining the Ax and Gun parts, which Momotaros usually lobs into the air, pulling out the Sword and Grip parts, and docking all four together as the joined Ax-Gun portion falls back down. Afterwards, a red blade extends from the top of the sword.
- For Rod Form, the DenGasher is used in . The four parts are linked together in a straight line, one by one - Sword, Gun, Ax, and Grip in that order. Once complete, the DenGasher extends itself until it reaches the size of a regular staff. It can also be used like a fishing rod and a harpoon.

Den-O has five different finishing moves, one for each form seen in the television series except for Plat Form. A Full Charge is started by swiping the Rider Pass across the Terminal Buckle, causing the Belt to charge up energy and transfer it into the Dengasher for a finishing attack. It is possible to increase the power of a Full Charge by swiping the pass multiple times.- When in Sword Form, Full Charge is used in conjunction with . The most common form of this attack consists of the DenGasher's blade detaching and flying at high speeds in mid-air, connected by a stream of energy to the hilt. It follows the path where Den-O slashes, making the attack an effective long-range finisher and a damaging short-range attack (as seen in the first episode, being cut with the stream of energy is apparently not as effective). When maneuvered properly, the detached blade can also lift the target to set up for aerial attacks. Less frequently, the Extreme Slash is manifested as simply a regular sword slash imbued with energy.

After catching it, he brings the axe crashing down on his opponent. When Kintaros himself assumed Ax Form, he performed an alternate variation that used a powerful spinning axe chop on his surrounding targets. In both variations, Kintaros notably says the name only after executing the attack. In one case however he said the name before executing the attack.

Once attached to the Den-O Belt and the code 3-6-9-# is entered, Den-O can transform into Climax Form. The K-Taros can also summon the DenKamen Sword to evoke Liner Form. It can also be used as a normal cell phone, often being used to communicate with the DenLiner crew.

is a weapon in the shape of a broadsword with a blade in the shape of a clock hand, created by the Tarōs for Ryotaro, serving as a means of communication from the DenLiner. Once the Rider Pass is inserted into it, Den-O assumes Liner Form to use the sword's full power. The Turntable hilt has the four masks of Sword, Rod, Ax, and Gun Forms. The Turntable spins by pulling the Delta Lever, and the Tarōs can speak through the sword when the respective mask is spun to the blade side. The default mode is , while the other three settings are , , and . The DenKamen Sword allows Ryotaro to use one of five finishing attacks, performing a different rushing attack on a set of energy tracks with the silhouette named the of the mode's respective train car covering him. Ryotaro dubs these five attacks the .- In Momo-Sword Mode, Den-O performs a powerful horizontal slash through the target with Gouka's AuraLiner covering him named the .

The is Den-O's personal Honda XR250 bike that is able to launch from the DenLiner. Although Ryotaro never uses it as a mean of transportation, the Imagin would sometimes use it while possessing his body. While docked in the DenLiner, it serves as the control mechanism for the train. When a Rider Pass, along with a Rider Ticket, is inserted into the Den-Bird while it is docked in the DenLiner, the date on the ticket becomes DenLiner's destination. During the fight with the Oct Imagin, the bike is sabotaged by the enemy and turns against Den-O. Though it burst into flames, the Den-Bird was later repaired or replaced fast enough to be used against the rampaging time-tracks under the control of the Oct Imagin's remains.DenLiner

The DenLiner arrives when a person holding a Rider Pass touches a door while the hour, minute and second of time are the same. It is able to travel to different times when a Rider Pass, along with a Rider Ticket that contains the date in which an Imagin has traveled to, is inserted into the DenBird, while docked in the DenLiner. The date then becomes the DenLiner's new destination in time.

Railroad car

. When not using a certain form, the DenLiner's eight cars are linked up, forming one large train. These railroad cars only disconnect and change form when Den-O is in the corresponding form. Form-specific cars can also link up with other cars in various orders to provide additional weaponry when fighting Gigandeaths. Furthermore, the DenLiner can link up with the ZeroLiner for more power. When Den-O enters Climax Form, the DenLiner is affected by the power surge and enters , turning a golden color with an intense fiery aura around it.
The DenLiner also has various non-combative cars that separate from the Gouka during battle and serve as settings for the television series and movies. These include the dining car where most of the series takes place, a bath car used several times late in the series, and the sleeping car where the group meets the Swan Imagin Sieg.
