The private equity firm Thoma Cressey Bravo
acquired 58% of Hyland Software on July 31, 2007. Shareholders approved the deal on July 12, 2007. Thoma Cressey Bravo paid $265 million for the deal, including $150 million in equity. Management retained their share of the company, amounting to roughly 20%, with the remaining shares being owned by employees and other friends and family members. Hyland Software's management team remained in place during this acquisition.
The deal was done to increase expertise in the higher education area.

Founding
Hyland Software was established in 1991 by Packy Hyland Jr. He met with members of the Necedah Bank to discuss their data processing and how electronic information technology could reduce printing costs by storing daily reports directly to optical disk. Packy Hyland created the first version of OnBase for the Necedah Bank, which became Hyland Software's first customer. Since OnBase was originally created for a bank, a majority of Hyland Software's customers were in the banking industry until recently when the healthcare and government fields became key industries.Private Equity Firm
