In November, Birchall signed for Carlisle on loan until the end of the year, having taken advice from teammate Keiren Westwood. When returning to Coventry, he agreed to have his contract terminated by mutual consent. The midfielder also opted not to return to Carlisle, after negotiations with an unnamed American club.
