Bundibugyo District is a district
in Western Uganda
, bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo
. Like other Ugandan districts, it is named after its 'chief town', Bundibugyo
, where the district headquarters are located.
to the northeast, Kibaale District
to the east, Kabarole District
to the south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo
to the west and north. The district headquarters at Bundibugyo
are located approximately 32 kilometres (19.9 mi), by road, west of Fort Portal
and 71 kilometres (44.1 mi), by road, north of Kasese
, the largest city in the sub-region. The geographic boundaries of the district are: The Semliki River
to the west, the Rwenzori Mountains to the East and Lake Albert to the North. The coordinates of the district are:00 43N, 30 04E.

than the rest of Uganda
, despite being politically in East Africa
. In 2010, the northern part of Bunduibugyo District was removed to form Ntoroko District. Bundibugyo District , together with neighbouring Ntoroko District
and Kasese District
, is part of the Rwenzururu Kingdom.
In the late 1990s, tens of thousands of civilians were displaced
by the insurgency of the Allied Democratic Forces
(ADF), who were operating in the district. In one such raid on 7 April 1999, rebels killed 11 civilians and looted property during an attack in the district. In a separate attack in the same month, the Member of Parliament
for Buyangabo was shot and wounded in an attack in neighboring Kabarole District
by ADF insurgents.

Overview
The district is relatively isolated from the rest of Uganda, as it is the only Ugandan district that lies west of the Rwenzori Mountains. Though it is still a part of the Nile basin, it is ecologically and culturally part of Central AfricaCentral Africa

Population
The 2002 national census estimated the population of Bundibugyo District, as configured after July 2010, at about 158,900. The annual population growth rate in the district was estimated at 4%. It is estimated that the populatuion of Bundibugyo District in 2010 was approximately 217,500. See table below:{| style="font-size:100%;"
