History

The airline was established and started operations on 3 November 2001. It was formed on the demise of the SAirGroup out of its leisure carrier Balair

 by one of Balair's largest customers, the holiday tour operator Hotelplan. It has 339 employees (as of June 2011).

In March 2007, German airline Air Berlin acquired a 49 per cent shareholding in Belair (with Hotelplan holding the other 51 per cent), to enable an increase in its activities in the Swiss market. Since then, Belair belongs to the Air Berlin
