The Wollomombi River is a river on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales
in Australia
. The headwaters of the Wollomombi River rise near the eastern slopes of Chandlers Peak on the Great Dividing Range
about 17 kilometres south-east of Guyra
. The Wollomombi River flows southwards near the village of Wollomombi
before tumbling over the Wollomombi Falls
just to the west of the Chandler Falls and shortly before the river’s confluence with the Chandler River
. From here the Chandler River, Oaky River
and Styx River
and Wollomombi Rivers are important tributaries of the Macleay River
. These rivers pass through a number of spectacular gorges
and waterfalls in the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park
.
In December 1904 Nellie Gardiner, 18, and Fanny Kennedy, 12, were drowned while bathing in the Wollomombi River. Another lady, Mrs. Snape, almost drowned, too, in attempting to rescue them.
Beef cattle and sheep are reared on the upper reaches of the river.
At the Wollomombi Falls lookout there are scenic gorge rim walks and a steep track that takes you down to the Chandler River.
