The Styx flows towards the south-west (initially away from the coast) along the western side of the Cunnawarra Range and across the Kempsey Road. From here it flows through part of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park
before rapidly descending into a deep gorge where it meets the Chandler River. It eventually joins the Macleay River
