Vaidiki Brahmins
Encyclopedia
Vaidiki Brahmins are a sect of Telugu
speaking Smartha Brahmin
s. They are predominantly followers of Adi Shankara
charya. The term Vaidika derives itself from the term Vedas
. Vaidikis are people who mastered Vedas, also called Ghanaapaathi(s). Ghanaapaathi is a term used to revere those who have mastered Vedas.
Vaidiki brahmins are mostly found in Andhra Pradesh
. There are some families in other parts of the country and they are said to have migrated from Andhra Pradesh.
Apart from Ghanaapaati(s), the Vaidiki community was into learning, upholding, and teaching various branches of Vedas and practicing Tapas
. They were teachers who taught Vedic Mathematics
, Vedic Chanting, and Vedic Astrology. They were Doctors who practiced and taught Vedic medicineAyurveda
.
There were few families within Vaidiki community who learned Vedic rituals and performed various rites and rituals, called Pourahityam, in strict accordance with the Vedas. Pourahityam was a family tradition limited to few families within
Vaidiki community. Members of the families whose tradition was Pourahityam were mainly priests, priests in temples, Courts of Kings, etc. Among the families that were into Pourahityam, there were some families who limited themselves to performing marriages and other such auspicious ceremonies like Upanayana
, Thread Ceremony, Baarasala, and Namakaranam/Naming Ceremony. There were some families who worked in temples or courts of Kings and some others who performed rituals that need to be performed after the death of a person. They all had to strictly follow certain rules.
These people were also heavily involved in performing Yagna, Yagas in olden days. Due to the decrease in abundance of Yagna Dravyas, as well change in lifestyle of people reduced the number of Yagnas. Moreover, these Yagnas are very elaborate and time consuming. The poojas performed by Vaidiki's are mostly in strict adherence to the Panchayatana Pooja Paddhati/Vidhi, as laid down by Adi Sankara; which includes: Ganapathi, Shiva
, Shakthi, Vishnu
and Surya
.
He started teaching Vedas and Tapas, deeper meditation, to his sons. During course of time he found that if he sends one of the son's for interpretation of dharmic sutras to the King, who used to come often for advice, the King would better govern Sanatana Dharma. As a result, he delegated ("niyoginchadam" in telugu) one son for such duty.
The various sub-sects among Vaidiki Brahmins are:
Rigvedics are those people who do not invoke the God of Fire, Agni
, for many rituals. It is said that RigVedic brahmins possess fire in their palms. The traditions followed by RigVedics are as described in Rigveda
. Yajurvedics invoke the God of Fire, Agni
, for all the Rituals. The traditions followed by Yajurvedics are known as Krishna Yajurveda
The marriage style also varies between RigVedics and YajurVedics. During marriages with the former, the thread used for Mangalsutra
is woven by 7 couples standing around the bride and groom making vedic chants. This thread is then used in the marriage. Also, the event Mangalsutra
dhaarana is preceded by Talambralu. In YajurVedics, the priest makes the thread for Mangalsutra
, and Mangalsutra
Dhaarana is succeeded by Tamlabralu.
The thread ceremony, Upanayanam
, also varies between these two traditions.
Families with the same surname are not always related. For example, the Bhagavatula families are from different regions of the state with different gothras. Each of these is identified distinctly using the place where they originally hailed from. Hence, there are Bhagavatulas of Kolluru with Sandilya
sa Gothra and Bhagavatulas of Visakhapatnam with Vadulasa Gothra, and they are not related to each other.
There are also instances where a surname would change along with time. Bhagavatulas of Kolluru were a branch of Garimellas. They acquired the name for the practices followed by one certain individual long back. Similarly, families that perform Vajapeya Yagam get the name Vajpeyayajula / Vajapeyajula / Vajipeyajula/Vajapey. And these families had a different surname earlier, and they may have the same gothra or a different one.

Traditionally, the lineage of a family with a surname is defined by the surname as well as gothra. Telaganya Brahmin Surnames
This sect of brahmins of Andhra Pradesh are mostly found in Telangana, North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema districts of Anantapur, Kadapa, Kurnool, and some parts of Chattisgarh. Their livelihood has been paurohityam. They are different from the temple priests who come under the Vaikhanasa sect of brahmins. Telaganya brahmins have surnames like vedantam(Gowtamasa gotram), Sagi, Boddupalli, Jonnabhatla, Maravajjhula, etc. However, the surname Vedantam is shared by Velanatlu sect and the Vaikhanasa (the priestly) sect. The Telaganya brahmins with the surname Vedantam were great scholars and philosophers. Their descendants are said to be living in Tenali, Guntur, and Hyderabad.Famil/Surname | Gothra | ||||||||||
