With learning the revelation Karen informs the authorities and prevents anyone from re-entering the house. As Karen tried to stop her boyfriend Doug from entering the house, Karen encounters Kayako who reveals more background information leading to the massacre.

executives, who anticipated just $20 million. The company stated that the film cost less than $10 million to produce, thereby making it one of the most profitable films of the year.
A sequel was announced the Monday after the The Grudge opened in North America. Later titled, The Grudge 2, the film opened on October 13, 2006 in North America, to capitalize on Friday the 13th
. The marketing worked, and the filmed grossed $10 million on its opening day. The Grudge 2 topped the North American box office with $20.8 million overall, during its opening weekend. This was well below what most analysts had expected. And more than 44% less than the opening of the previous film. However, despite failing to reach expectations, it was enough to cover its $20 million production budget. In total, the film had grossed $39 million in North America, the equivalent to what the first film opened with. Worldwide the film grossed $70,711,175.
A sequel
, The Grudge 2
, was announced three days after the film opened. The sequel stars Amber Tamblyn
as Aubrey, who is Karen's little sister. She is sent to Japan by their mother to investigate the whereabouts of Karen, who has not been heard from. The film was released on Friday, October 13, 2006 in the U.S, and opened at the top of the box office with $20.8 million. And despite collapsing after, its total gross of $39.1 million exceeded the $20 million production budget. The film was released to DVD on February 6, 2007, and sold 290,902 units ($5.2 million). By the year's end, it had sold 461,016 units ($8.3 million).
A sequel to The Grudge 2 was officially announced by Sony
during Comic-Con
2006. Takashi Shimizu
stated he was offered to direct
the sequel but would rather prefer to have produced
the film instead. It was released on DVD on May 12, 2009, and sold more than 58,000 units ($1.12 million). By the end of 2009 the film was estimated to have sold 298,000 units ($4.3 million).
The film is notable for being the first film in The Grudge series to be rated R rather than PG-13 as the previous two were.
A sequel was announced in August 2011, with a release set for 2012. The film will be a reboot of the series, rather than a direct sequel. And is expected to introduce a new storyline, not that of the Saeki Family curse that covered the prior films.
