is the minimum great circle
distance to a point of higher elevation.
This article defines a significant summit as a summit with at least 100 meters (328.1 feet) of topographic prominence, and a major summit as a summit with at least 500 meters (1640.4 feet) of topographic prominence. An ultra-prominent summit is a summit with at least 1500 meters (4921.3 feet) of topographic prominence. There are 356 ultra-prominent summits of North America.
All elevations in the 48 states
of the contiguous United States
include an elevation adjustment from the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD 29) to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988

Of these 200 highest major summits, 159 are located in the United States, 31 in Canada, 10 in Mexico, 7 in Guatemala, and 1 in Costa Rica
. Eight of these peaks lie on an international border.
In North America, only Mount McKinley
exceeds 6000 meters (19,685 feet) elevation. Eleven major summits exceed 5000 meters (16,404.2 feet), and 124 exceed 4000 meters (13,123.4 feet) elevation.
