Orchestria Corporation (2000–2009)
Founded by Malcolm in 2000, Orchestria was an early pioneer in what became known as the Data Loss Prevention (DLP) market. DLP solutions monitor Internet communications, typically for corporate customers, detecting and/or preventing accidental or unauthorized disclosure of sensitive or valuable data in email, instant messaging and Web activity. The bursting of the dot-com bubble
hampered early progress, but Orchestria found a niche in the financial services industry, particularly as a result of the activities of New York State Attorney General
Eliot Spitzer
, which resulted in many high-profile banks being fined for the unlawful activity of their employees, often in email messages. Most notably, the Global Settlement
of 2003 required ten of the largest institutions on Wall Street
to implement a Chinese Wall
between their research and investment banking operations, for which Orchestria provided a unique solution.
In 2004, Malcolm hired Bo Manning (formerly CEO of Nasdaq listed Pivotal Corporation, makers of Pivotal CRM
), and between them they grew the company into a multi-million dollar success story. In 2007, Orchestria was named one of the top three fastest growing technology companies by Deloitte.
By 2008, Orchestria had over 150 employees and claimed revenues of US $27M. Marquee customers included Citigroup

Computer Associates International (1996–2000)
In 1996, Computer Associates (now CA, Inc.) was the world’s third largest software company after Microsoft
and Oracle
. Malcolm joined the company as a result of its acquisition of Cheyenne Software in 1997, and relocated to work in its New York headquarters in 1998. In 1999 he was appointed Senior Vice President, responsible for the company's storage software business. Malcolm left CA in 2000 to join Benchmark Capital.
IQ International (1989–1996)
Founded by Malcolm in 1989, IQ International was the company responsible for the technique known in the data storage industry as Open File Backup, a means of allowing "snapshot" copies of data files to be captured by a backup product while they are open and in use by the application that owns them. The problem is significant, since backups taken while a file is in use carry a high risk of data corruption
. The techniques patented by Malcolm are now widely employed across the computer industry, for example as the Volume Shadow Copy Service
in the Microsoft Windows
Operating System.
IQ International’s product Open File Manager was initially sold exclusively by St. Bernard Software, a San Diego-based company, which emerged from the ashes of storage vendor Emerald Systems Corporation. The product was highly praised and sold well until 1996 when IQ International was acquired by Cheyenne Software, effectively pulling the rug from beneath St Bernard’s feet. Cheyenne, and later, CA continued to sell the product in large numbers. Still selling nearly 15 years after its first introduction, today it is known as the Open File Agent.
The ability to back up open files has subsequently become an essential feature of any backup solution, and is available from virtually every backup vendor. All are understood to be based on the techniques originally invented by Malcolm.
