Newmarket station consists of two elevated side platforms; Platform 1 has a large red brick building, while platform 2 has a red brick building of similar size. A large Metcard
ticket vending machine is located at the entrance to platform 1, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A small coin-only Metcard ticket vending machine is located at the entrance to platform 2. An underpass is situated at the Craigieburn end of the station.
Special services to Flemington Racecourse and Showgrounds
stations run though the station, but do not stop for passengers with signs on the platform advising customers of the fact. The junction for the Flemington Racecourse line itself is at the down end of the station.
Platform 2:
line to Essendon. The station closed with the line in 1864 until it was reopened in 1871 under government ownership. A permanent station building was first constructed in 1886. The present buildings were built in 1925. The bridge at Racecourse Road is the third on the site. Interlocking

The station was used during construction of CityLink
in 1997-1998 to shuttle passengers to and from Flemington Bridge station (on the Upfield line). This was because Macaulay station was closed, and trains did not run between Flemington Bridge and North Melbourne
. This was necessary to allow the construction of raised roads linking the West Gate Freeway
with the Tullamarine Freeway
for the CityLink project. This increased the journey time for the Upfield line by 10–20 minutes.
