List of closed stack libraries
Encyclopedia
A closed stack library contains books and other items that are not available for viewing or browsing by the general public. Many important libraries around the world close their stacks of books to the public, limiting access and use to professionally trained library staff only. By closing the stacks libraries are assured that there is a minimum of lost books due to re-shelving errors that are frequently introduced by the general public, resulting at times in lost books for long periods of time, often decades.
