television program Hardball with Chris Matthews
, in which James first supported a highly partisan comparison of Barack Obama
to former British prime minister Neville Chamberlain
's appeasement of Hitler in Munich
in 1938.
Earlier that day, President George W. Bush
, addressing the Israel
i Knesset
, had said that while "some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals," he believed that "we have an obligation to call this what it is -- the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history." While James said he did not know if Bush was in fact making a veiled reference to Obama, he argued in favor of the comparison itself. The other guest, Air America Radio
president Mark J. Green
, denounced Bush's comparison.
After James agreed with the analogy to Chamberlain and referred to candidate Obama as an appeaser, host Chris Matthews
turned to James and, saying he was conducting a "history check," asked "what did Chamberlain do wrong?" When James failed to give an answer more specific than that "he was an appeaser," The only answers James gave were variations on the original answer, repeating his insistence that "he was an appeaser," and did not identify any of the specifics or facts associated with Chamberlain's actions on the eve of World War II, eventually admitting "I don't know" what Chamberlain did.
James appeared on the January 12, 2009 episode of The Daily Show
as a direct result of his Hardball appearance.
. James's campaign focuses on fiscal accountability and transparency, including delegating power to the neighborhood councils and reducing business taxation. If elected, he would be the first openly gay mayor of Los Angeles.
