He has also been accused of "brainwashing" a 16-year-old girl in Minnesota, whose family now has a restraining order against him, and has admitted to harassing another 16-year-old Minnesota girl online.
Sharkey's 2006 bid for Minnesota governor was cut short after Sharkey was arrested by Minnesota police on an outstanding Indiana arrest warrant, sent to Mille Lacs County jail and extradited to Indiana.
In 2010, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children
issued an alert after a 16-year-old girl, Paige Brewer, from Faribault, Minnesota
ran away with Sharkey. The alert described Brewer as an "endangered runaway", and Brewer's mother labeled Sharkey a psychopath. Sharkey and Brewer subsequently posted comments online in which they stated their intention to get married. Police investigators in Faribault subsequently stated that they were not treating the matter as a missing persons case, but one Faribault police detective attempted to establish contact with Brewer. Brewer's mother stated that Sharkey had "completely brainwashed" her daughter, while Brewer alleged that she herself was a vampire, that she had been a victim of child abuse
and her decision to elope with Sharkey was her own. In response to critics of her relationship with Sharkey, Brewer reportedly said "I bit him first. Let me live my life." She also expressed a desire to obtain legal emancipation from her mother. Sharkey expressed a desire to "completely destroy" Brewer's mother, who eventually won a court order keeping Sharkey away from her daughter, who was taken into custody by police and returned home.
