 shortly before the outbreak of World War I, on 13 July 1914. He was promoted to Leutnant on 4 January 1915 and served as platoon leader and company chief in the Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 58 (58th infantry regiment). He was injured three times. He transferred to the Luftstreitkräfte
