Political career

Bagirov remained the rector of Western University until 2000, when he was appointed the Minister of Trade and served until 2001. On May 23, 2001 he was appointed Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Republic. In 2005, he was elected the President of Air and Extreme Sports Federation of Azerbaijan Republic. He led Azerbaijani expeditions to Antarctica and Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro
