Graph theory
In mathematics and computer science, graph theory is the study of graphs, mathematical structures used to model pairwise relations between objects from a certain collection. A "graph" in this context refers to a collection of vertices or 'nodes' and a collection of edges that connect pairs of...

, a mathematical discipline, a Halin graph is a planar graph
Planar graph
In graph theory, a planar graph is a graph that can be embedded in the plane, i.e., it can be drawn on the plane in such a way that its edges intersect only at their endpoints...

Tree (graph theory)
In mathematics, more specifically graph theory, a tree is an undirected graph in which any two vertices are connected by exactly one simple path. In other words, any connected graph without cycles is a tree...

with at least four vertices and with no vertices of degree 2, by connecting all the leaves of the tree (the vertices of degree 1) with a cycle
Cycle (graph theory)
In graph theory, the term cycle may refer to a closed path. If repeated vertices are allowed, it is more often called a closed walk. If the path is a simple path, with no repeated vertices or edges other than the starting and ending vertices, it may also be called a simple cycle, circuit, circle,...

that passes around the tree in the natural cyclic order defined by the embedding of the tree. Halin graphs are named after German mathematician Rudolf Halin, who defined them in 1964; they are sometimes also called roofless polyhedra.

Examples

Every wheel graph
Wheel graph
In the mathematical discipline of graph theory, a wheel graph Wn is a graph with n vertices, formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of an -cycle. The numerical notation for wheels is used inconsistently in the literature: some authors instead use n to refer to the length of the cycle,...

Pyramid (geometry)
In geometry, a pyramid is a polyhedron formed by connecting a polygonal base and a point, called the apex. Each base edge and apex form a triangle. It is a conic solid with polygonal base....

. The graph of a triangular prism
Triangular prism
In geometry, a triangular prism is a three-sided prism; it is a polyhedron made of a triangular base, a translated copy, and 3 faces joining corresponding sides....

is also a Halin graph; it can be drawn so that one of its rectangular faces is the exterior cycle, and the remaining edges form a tree with four leaves, two interior vertices, and five edges.

The Frucht graph
Frucht graph
In the mathematical field of graph theory, the Frucht graph is a 3-regular graph with 12 vertices, 18 edges, and no nontrivial symmetries. It was first described by Robert Frucht in 1939....

Graph automorphism
In the mathematical field of graph theory, an automorphism of a graph is a form of symmetry in which the graph is mapped onto itself while preserving the edge–vertex connectivity....

Properties

  • Every Halin graph is an edge-minimal planar 3-connected graph, and therefore by Steinitz's theorem
    Steinitz's theorem
In polyhedral combinatorics, a branch of mathematics, Steinitz's theorem is a characterization of the undirected graphs formed by the edges and vertices of three-dimensional convex polyhedra: they are exactly the 3-vertex-connected planar graphs...

  • Every Halin graph has a unique planar embedding (up to the choice of the outer space; i.e., a unique embedding onto a 2-sphere).
  • Every Halin graph is a Hamiltonian graph, and every edge of the graph belongs to a Hamiltonian cycle. Moreover, any Halin graph remains Hamiltonian after deletion of any vertex.
  • Every Halin graph is almost pancyclic
    Pancyclic graph
In the mathematical study of graph theory, a pancyclic graph is a directed or undirected graph that contains cycles of all possible lengths from three up to the number of vertices in the graph...

, in the sense that it has cycles of all lengths from 3 to n with the possible exception of a single even length. Moreover, any Halin graph remains almost pancyclic if a single edge is contracted, and every Halin graph without interior vertices of degree three is pancyclic.
  • Every Halin graph has treewidth at most three; therefore, many graph optimization problems that are NP-complete
    NP-complete
In computational complexity theory, the complexity class NP-complete is a class of decision problems. A decision problem L is NP-complete if it is in the set of NP problems so that any given solution to the decision problem can be verified in polynomial time, and also in the set of NP-hard...

    Dynamic programming
In mathematics and computer science, dynamic programming is a method for solving complex problems by breaking them down into simpler subproblems. It is applicable to problems exhibiting the properties of overlapping subproblems which are only slightly smaller and optimal substructure...

  • Because every tree contains two leaves that share the same parent, every Halin graph contains a triangle. In particular, it is not possible for a Halin graph to be a triangle-free graph
    Triangle-free graph
In the mathematical area of graph theory, a triangle-free graph is an undirected graph in which no three vertices form a triangle of edges. Triangle-free graphs may be equivalently defined as graphs with clique number ≤ 2, graphs with girth ≥ 4, graphs with no induced 3-cycle, or locally...

    Dual graph
In mathematics, the dual graph of a given planar graph G is a graph which has a vertex for each plane region of G, and an edge for each edge in G joining two neighboring regions, for a certain embedding of G. The term "dual" is used because this property is symmetric, meaning that if H is a dual...

    Biconnected graph
In the mathematical discipline of graph theory, a biconnected graph is a connected graph with no articulation vertices. In other words, a biconnected graph is connected and nonseparable, meaning that if any vertex were to be removed, the graph will remain connected. The property of being 2-connected...

In graph theory, an undirected graph is an outerplanar graph if it can be drawn in the plane without crossings in such a way that all of the vertices belong to the unbounded face of the drawing. That is, no vertex is totally surrounded by edges...
