GSP has been plagued throughout its history for higher airfares, due to the dominance of Atlanta and Charlotte's airports in close proximity. In a 2009 survey, Forbes magazine listed Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport as #5 of "America's Top 25 Rip-Off Airports". However, in 2010, Southwest Airlines
announced its intentions to serve Greenville-Spartanburg in early 2011, likely resulting in more competitive fares for the Upstate market.
