until June 27, 2011 when it closed. It will re-open in Fall 2011 to house Metro Cinema Edmonton
programming.
It was designated a Municipal Historic Resource on October 28, 2009.
Designed by noted Edmonton architect William Blakey and built in 1940, the Garneau is the only remaining theatre of early modernism
style and period in Alberta. The theatre originally operated independently until it joined with Famous Players
in 1941. The theatre closed down in the late 1980s for a brief period but was restored in 1996.
The theatre hosts the annual Edmonton International Film Festival
