Fredrikson Stallard
Encyclopedia
Fredrikson Stallard was established in 2002 by the furniture and product design duo Patrik Fredrikson (born, 1968 Sweden) and Ian Stallard (born 1973, UK).
; Stallard graduating in 1996 [BA (Hons) Ceramics], whilst Fredrikson in 1998 [BA (Hons) Product Design]. Their cutting edge, conceptually rigorous work has been regularly discussed and praised in the design press and is sought after by discerning collectors. Their work has been acquired by the French National Art Collection and shown at the Victoria and Albert Museum
and the Design Museum
in London, and their Pandora chandelier hangs in the Museum of Art and Design in New York. They have worked with some of the leading names in contemporary design, including David Gill Galleries, Contrasts Gallery, Swarovski
, The Savoy, Chanel
, Veuve Clicquot
, the London Design Festival
, Bernhardt Design and Iittala
.
In 2002 Fredrikson Stallard launched their joint practice and moved to a 3,500 sq/ft atelier in East London, in which their design practice has been able to flourish. Fredrikson Stallard has exhibited widely in London, Milan, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Shanghai, Basel and Miami. Their work is given extensive coverage by press and print, featuring in books and publications such as; The International design Yearbook, Limited Edition by Sophie Lovell, The Furniture Machine by Gareth Williams, 21st Century design by Marcus Fairs, Design contre Design by Jean-Louis Gaillemin, The New York Times, Art & Auction, The Times, Architectural Digest, Vogue

Their early works include a series of vases as well as Table#1 and Table#2. These pieces are raw chunks of untreated birch
industrially strapped together to form a table with large cracks in the top surface. CABLE and DRAGON are porcelain
vases decorated with three-dimensional additions that have connotations from both the modern world and the ancient past anchored on simple upright shapes with narrow necks. With CABLE, electric leads and cable clamps wrap the body of the vase, whereas Chinese dragonheads fortify the otherwise pure form of the DRAGON vase. The vase DEAD is created by deliberately exaggerating pitfalls of ceramic
production. The creation of a partial vacuum
inside the piece during the making process causes folds and ruptures. The MING collection marries high and low culture blending preciousness and mass consumerism. Rather than coating the piece in the traditional way with glaze, each piece is encased in industrial plastics.
The more recent Pandora chandelier
was created for the Swarovski
Crystal Palace show in Milan 2007. A piece that is constantly destroyed and recreated through movement, the 1,990 crystals are initially suspended in the form of a recognisable chandelier, before slowly erupting in different directions into a chaotic array. The crystals then change direction, return softly to the chandelier form, only for a moment, before fracturing off in the other direction.
Their largest work to date is 2008's Portrait, commissioned by Veuve Clicquot
with the London Design Festival
was created to be a beacon to celebrate the London Design Festival 2008. A single piece of wood was magnified and transformed using a combination of corten steel and light to recreate the familiar grain structure of wood. The piece was positioned on the river terrace of Somerset House
next to Waterloo Bridge
.
Two of Fredrikson Stallard's works have been acquired by the Victoria and Albert museum for their permanent collection, thanks to funding from the Outset Design Fund. The pieces chosen are Fredrikson Stallard's now iconic Table#1 together with another of their seminal works, the Pyrenees sofa. The pieces are now on view in the new acquisitions gallery as part of the London Design Festival. Table#1 will be later become a final chapter in the permanent 20th Century collection, and the Pyrenees sofa will also form part of next years exhibition British Design 1948 - 2012, which will coincide with the Olympic Games in London.
