In continental competitions Universidad Católica is better known because they have qualified to international competitions more often, reached the final of the Copa Libertadores in 1993, and won the Interamerican Cup in 1994.
The first time that the match was played professionally was in 1937, but before, Universidad Católica had defeated Universidad de Chile more often as amateur sides. The biggest goal difference in a match was Universidad Católica 5:0 Universidad de Chile, but Universidad de Chile has won it in more occasions. The last time the match was played was in November first, 2009 in the Estadio Monumental David Arellano
