The university was established by federal law on December 18, 1960. It's the former union of five federal colleges and three state colleges. It has about 50.158 undergraduate students, 11.675 graduate students and 2.852 faculties (2011). It has six campii in the city of Niterói

, one of the oldest and best preseverd neighboorhoods in town, the Campus has contributed to a change in the area. Once strictly residential, it was transformed into a point of intense activity where, since the early 90's, bars, restaurants, bookstores and cultural areas were opened.
Campus da Praia Vermelha houses the Engineering, Architecture, Physics, Geophysics, Geography and Computer Science courses. Some of the buildings in campus are historical and contrast with other modern constructions in the same area.
At Campus do Valonguinho, the closest to the ferryboat station that takes you to Rio de Janeiro city, you will find courses on Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Dentistry, Nutrition, Tourism, Business Administration, Accounting, Mathematics and Statistics.
Some schools and institutes are located outside campuses, such as the Institute of Art and Social Communication, with the courses of Film and Video Studies, Marketing, Journalism, Library Studies, Media and Cultural Production; the School of Economics, the Law School, the Medical School, the Nursing School, the Biomedical Institute, the Veterinary School and the Pharmacy School and the Institute of Community Health at the University Hospital Antônio Pedro.
The Rectory Building, also an off-campus art déco preserved building, houses most of administrative facilities, including the International Office.

UFF Art Center is a complex located at the Rectory Building that includes a theater, a movie theater and an art gallery. They all offer cultural activities, at a low cost, to the people of Niterói. Fluminense Federal University is recognized as a top university in Latin American standarts and figures in several Latin American rankings.
